Why I’m Trying Aluminum-Free Deodorant

There are constantly new blog posts being written by huge brands like Refinery 29, Create and Cultivate, Allure, The Everygirl… and the list goes on and on. When I saw that Dove came out with an aluminum-free deodorant, I knew it was time to actually read those posts. And dang, regular deodorant is not great for you!

Our armpits are extremely absorbent. When we use antiperspirants with toxic chemicals that suppress our sweat, we are introducing our bodies to chemicals such as aluminum which can have negative effects on our bodies. Some people claim that aluminum can increase chances of breast cancer and Alzheimer’s (although both the Alzheimer Association as well as the National Cancer Institute have stated that there’s no significant health risk associated with aluminum). Regardless, I’m not sure I’m willing to take that risk for something as small as deodorant.

I’ve tested out two aluminum-free deodorant brands, and included a few others at the end that I’ve heard great things about!

1. Dove Aluminum-Free

Dove is my brand of choice, even before they released the aluminum-free version. This is by far my favorite! The deodorant still allows for sweating, but I don’t stink. And I love their scents.

Did it pass the workout test? Yes.

Do I recommend this? Yes.

2. Crystal Deodorant

After seeing Jen Atkin’s Instagram post about Crystal Deodorant, I knew I had to try this! So, I reached out to to them and asked if I could review their product. They were awesome and sent me samples! Here’s my honest opinion: this stuff actually works, unless I’m working out. For normal day-to-day wear, this surprisingly works very well. I still sweat, but I don’t smell like anything (with the unscented deodorant).  I don’t think I have ever not smelled bad when sweating (lol). This was so surprising! Like a magic trick or something. My favorite version of their deodorant is a mineral chunk that you wet before you swipe it on your armpits. They also have a more traditional scented-stick deodorant as well as a scented roll-on deodorant. I opted for the stick when I worked out, but in the heat of the moment, my sweat was definitely stinky. After the workout, though, I smelled fine.

Something I love about Crystal Deodorant is the price point – some natural deodorants can get into the double digits for 1 stick. This is less than $7! And they’re offering my readers a DISCOUNT! Use code: ITSMEGAN10 for 10% off your entire order (no order minimum).

Did it pass the workout test? No.

Do I recommend this? Yes.

3. Kopari

This brand seems to make all of the “Top Natural Deodorant” lists on the internet. Plus, you can buy this at Target! This one is much more expensive than the two I tried (it’s $14), but it is made from coconut oil and coconut water.

4. Native

This is another brand I see all over the internet. The price is around $12, it comes in a ton of scents, and I love their branding! They also have Men’s and Teen’s deodorants, and an option on their website to customize your scent. Native uses probiotics in their deodorants which makes them stand out among the crowd. And – you can buy it at Target!

5. Tom’s

Tom’s is super affordable (under $5), and is a brand known for clean products. This deodorant does only have a 3 star review on Target’s website, but it supposedly smells great.

Pin for later!

I’ve heard a couple youtubers talk about aluminum in deodorants. I need to do more research! But I use the “Teen Spirit” deodorant by Lady Speed Stick, it smells so good! It’s going to be hard to break up with it!

I never even heard of aluminum in deodorant until a couple months ago. I think I will be hoping aboard the aluminum free train soon
